Kick-off meeting of the Working Group "Location Based Services": great opportunities for a market with high potential

Date: 04-01-2012

Place: Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce

The global market of "Location Based Services" (LBS) is estimated to 500 million users in 2012. Fueled by technological innovations in mobile devices, communication networks and precise positioning techniques, it will most probably continue its rapid growth in the years to come. There are a lot of ongoing R&D activities in this broad domain everywhere in the world, and notably in Luxembourg.

After a well appreciated session on this topic at the last "Business Meets Research" Forum in 2011, Luxinnovation decided to launch a new Working Group gathering members of the Luxembourg Space and ICT Clusters. The kick-off meeting was held on 15 December 2011, at the Chamber of Commerce, with the objectives of providing an overview of the LBS activities in Luxembourg and agreeing on common future objectives.

The meeting was attended by around 30 persons of Luxembourg’s LBS community (ICT and Space applications companies, telecom operators, web agencies, LBS developers and providers, public research organisations). After an introduction on the subject and an overview of European opportunities, the participants had the opportunity to present the competencies of their respective organisation and exchange with each other. They also agreed on future objectives of the group.

This first meeting was judged a great success, with high value added presentations of various projects and ideas related to this promising fast growing market. The objectives for this working group will be to establish new partnerships for R&D projects, to enhance the visibility of its members, especially in view of new user groups, to improve knowledge sharing and to develop a roadmap with the potential creation of testbeds.

The participants decided to meet on a regular basis and a second meeting will be organised next spring.
