    The company LuxSpace, based in Luxembourg, announced on 9 January 2012, the successful launch of VesselSat2, an Automatic Identification Service (AIS) enabled satellite. VesselSat2 was launched by the China Great Wall Industry Corporation from the Tiayuan Satellite Launch Center (TSLC) in the Shanxi Province of the People’s Republic of China on 8 January 2012 at 10:17 PM EST.

  • 04-01-2012 Kick-off meeting of the Working Group "Location Based Services": great opportunities for a market with high potential

    The global market of "Location Based Services" (LBS) is estimated to 500 million users in 2012. There are a lot of ongoing R&D activities in this broad domain, notably in Luxembourg. Luxinnovation has launched a new Working Group gathering members of the Luxembourg Space and ICT Clusters. The kick-off meeting on 15 December 2011 aimed to provide an overview of the LBS activities in Luxembourg and to agree on common future objectives. The participants decided to meet on a regular basis and a second meeting took place on 30 March 2012.

  • 02-12-2011 New way forward for Galileo satellite navigation

    The European Commission has proposed on 30 November 2011 the new framework for the financing and governance of the two European satellite navigation programmes Galileo and EGNOS (GPS signal augmentation) for the period 2014-2020. The Commission proposes to earmark €7.0 billions to guarantee the completion of the EU satellite navigation infrastructure and to ensure the exploitation of the systems until 2020, such as the operations of the space and terrestrial infrastructures, the necessary replenishment/replacement activities, certification procedures, and notably the provision of services. The proposal also recalls that the Union remains the owner of the systems. Therefore the management of the programmes' exploitation should be delegated to the European GNSS Agency while management of the programmes' deployment should be delegated to the European Space Agency.
