ESA and EDA are pleased to announce the 3rd User/Stakeholder Workshop on UAS on March 8th 2012, at the ESA Redu Centre, in Redu (Belgium).
Key Objectives of the Workshop
The main objectives of the workshop are to inform and consult ESA and EDA Member States as well as UAS stakeholders (users, industries, authorities) about:
- ESA-EDA cooperation on UAS: strategic aspects
- ESA and EDA activities on UAS
- UAS applications scenarios
- Regulatory aspects
Agenda
The programme for the workshop is still being established. It is intended to address at least the following topics:
- UAS Joint ESA-EDA Roadmap
- UAS Applications & Operational Scenarios.
- UAS Standards & Regulations.
The preliminary agenda of the workshop is available here
or see downloads below.
Who should attend
Participation is particularly encouraged from ESA and EDA (participating) Member States, users, service providers, technology providers and policy makers who are willing to get informed and involved in the UAS domain. Attendees should have an interest in enhancing UAS capabilities through the combination with space systems for air traffic insertion and for applications such as environmental monitoring, asset inspection and civil security services.
Registration and Logistics
The event will be free of charge. Registrations are open until February 17th. To request registration, please fill in the registration form. Please note that the hosting capacity is limited. Background
In the framework of the on-going cooperation between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Defence Agency (EDA), a specific Project Arrangement (PA) for the demonstration project of an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS)-based mission was signed on 15th of December 2011 in Paris. This project, which is part of the ESA-EDA joint initiative on UAS is co-funded by ESA and EDA, aims at demonstrating the value of space for UAS-based services and for UAS safe insertion in non-segregated airspace.
This project is part of the ESA Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES) 20 programme element dedicated to the development and promotion of applications and services that use space systems with the objectives to establish sustainable operational solutions. For EDA, the demonstration project is part of the UAS Air Traffic Insertion work strand. It is intended to complement the EDA Joint Investment Programme on UAS under the European Framework Cooperation.
The main objectives of the project are:
- Demonstrate to the user community that UAS supported by satellites and flying in non-segregated airspace can fulfil their needs.
- Demonstrate the capability of safe insertion of UAS in non-segregated airspace using satellites, identify issues and required procedures, and provide early inputs to regulatory bodies.
The project will involve representatives of the user communities for the selected demonstration scenarios, e.g. environment and maritime surveillance applications. The ITT is planned to be issued in beginning of Q1/2012 (more information will be published in EMITS under the reference of 11.1AA.11).
